I, Joy Huebscher, began studying the flute at the age of nine and fell in love with playing. I continued to major in music in college and in graduate school, but in graduate school I started feeling a great deal of pain in my neck, shoulders, and arms. I know other musicians have had to quit playing their instruments because of tendinitis and carpal tunnel syndrome. I became scared. Fortunately, I was accepted to the University of Illinois for my doctoral work where two Alexander Technique training courses were located in the area. My flute teacher at the university was Alexander Murray, also a master teacher of the Alexander Technique as well as an incredible flute player and teacher.
The Alexander Technique shows me daily how to improve my personal flute playing, and I use its principles to help my flute students as well. When I am not happy with my playing, I examine what I am doing with myself, especially my back.
As a flute teacher, I work to learn each student's learning style, and strive to teach to it as well as their musical goals. I also look for and create performance opportunities for them to share with family and friends and expand their learning experience. I love to teach students of all ages, helping me to continually learn from them as well.
Those who know you take flute lessons want to hear you play.
Masterclasses give students a chance to learn from others and have fun at the same time.
